Effects of Amikacin Sulfate on Urinary Tract Infections

Abstract
Amikacin, a new semisynthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic was administered to 37 patients
wih urinary tract infections intramuscularly at a dose of 400mg. once a day for 5 or 7 days. The 37 cases of urinary infections had no Amikacin treatment interfering factors such as urinary obstruction, diabetes mellitus and chronic debilitating diseases.
The global clinical results were seen to be excellent in 33 cases, its effectiveness rate being 89.2%.
The failure to treatment occurred in Staphylococcal urethritis (25%) and Gonococcal urethritis (12.5%).
Staphylococcal infection showed also disparity between the clinical effect and in vitro sensitivity.
We¢¥d better give Amikacin in more dose and for longer duration in the complicated urinary infections or previously treated cases.
Anyway, Amikacin proved to be one of the most useful antibiotics for simple urinary infections without any significant side-effects.
